Horse Trough Falls is a hidden gem north of Helen, GA. Getting there is part of the adventure on winding backroads. Prepare for a bumpy unpaved ride.
Directions from Helen: continue north on Hwy 17/75 and turn left onto what our GPS called Wilks Road (information we found listed this road as FS Road # 44). Plugging Horse Trough Falls into our GPS took us almost exactly there but we had to continue on the road a little further to the parking area at the Upper Chattahoochee River Campground. There aren’t any obvious signs to the falls, which helps to keep it a hidden gem. Park at the campground which was closed while we were there and then walk to the back of the campground. If you see an abandoned vehicle as you’re walking, you’re going the right direction! You will see a trail at the back of the campground there with a green diamond. Follow that for .2 miles to the falls. In the winter this area was very secluded (we only saw two other people there).
After spending time at the falls, we started heading back to the campground. A side trail to the left with no sign as you approach the bridge took us to another impressive falls. The only reason we found this one was due to the other people we saw informing us of this. The area may be more crowded during warmer months, but while we were here it felt like a local secret.
