While visiting the Adirondacks in New York this fall, our mission was to find a scenic overlook. Being short on time, we wanted one that we could drive the majority of the way to the view. We attempted to visit the famous Whiteface Mountain summit. It was a perfect fall day, and as we started the drive up we were stopped at a gate which indicated the summit drive was closed for the season. We were surprised because the weather was gorgeous and we were sure the view at the top would be amazing. Plan B: find another mountain drive! We are really happy we found Prospect Mountain. It is a 5.5 mile drive to the top with overlooks along the way. At the parking lot we opted to take a short hike to the top to witness the views of Lake George and the remains of an old cable railway which was the original access to the top of the mountain and operated from 1895 to 1903. We didn’t have to pay to drive up this route but information I’ve found indicates that during peak season it costs 10$/car.
According to AllTrails, a 3.3 mile trail starting near Lake George is an alternative option for reaching the summit of Prospect Mountain. The site mentions that this trail is not dog friendly. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-york/prospect-mountain-trail
