Gem We Discovered By Accident

On our way to find a peaceful spot to spend the day on the Chatooga River, we saw signs leading to Stumphouse Tunnel and Waterfalls. A 5$ per vehicle day use fee led us to a South Carolina gem. The tunnel was dug out with hand tools and is a 1/4 mile long. It was dug prior to the Civil War and never completed. Issaqueena Falls is 200 feet tall and a parking area is located a short drive from the tunnel. A .25 mile boardwalk leads to an overlook of the falls, and a short but rough trail goes down to the base of the falls.

Location: Stumphouse Tunnel Road, Walhalla, SC
